In the framework of tightening measures to curb the activities of poaching groups, in September-October of the current year the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan conducted investigative and operational measures in the territories of Atyrau, Aktobe, West Kazakhstan, Turkestan and Kyzylorda regions, as well as in the cities of Almaty and Shymkent to suppress the activities of an organized criminal group that had been carrying out illegal shooting of saigas for a long time for further resale, transportation and export of its horns by smuggling to China.
During the searches operational investigative group seized 1 ton 118 kg (more than 3 thousand individuals) of the saiga horns. According to experts, the damage from the illegal activities of organized crime groups to the state is 5 billion 664.6 million tenge.
Within the framework of the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under the article 262 part 2 (participation in an organized criminal group) and the article 339 (illegal treatment of rare and endangered species, as well as prohibited species of plants or animals, their parts or derivatives) of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan 18 members of the criminal group were detained (all citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan), 9 of which were taken into custody with the approval of the court.
