On October 23, 2019, officers of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the territory of the Kyzylorda region prevented an attempt to sell more than 240 kg. of uranium concentrate.
As a result of a special operation, 4 members of a criminal group were detained who were suspected of an offense under part 2 of article 283 of the Criminal Code “illegal handling of radioactive substances, radioactive waste and nuclear materials”.
According to the conclusion of the Institute of Nuclear Physics, the seized uranium concentrate is a dangerous radioactive substance, the radiation level of which is many times higher than the permissible norm and poses a serious risk to the environment and public health (radiological and toxicological consequences).
According to the investigation, the radioactive substance was stolen by malefactors at one of the enterprises developing the vanadium ore deposit.
Other information in the interests of the pre-trial investigation was not disclosed.
