On August 6, 2019, the Specialized Interregional Court in the city of Taldykorgan issued a sentence against the leaders of the organized criminal group “Zharkent”, who had been hiding from justice for a long time.
Thus, Zh. Begimbetov was found guilty of committing crimes under article 28 part 3 of the Criminal Code (types of accomplices in a criminal offense), article 194 part 4 paragraph 1 (extortion), article 262 part 1 (establishment and participation in an organized crime group) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Zh. Begimbetov was sentenced to 6 years and 6 months of imprisonment serving in the institution of the penal correction system with maximum security.
In conjunction with the above, M. Niyazov was additionally found guilty of committing crimes under article 367 part 4 (giving a bribe), article 392 part 1 (deliberate illegal border crossing) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan and was sentenced to imprisonment for 7 years with serving in a similar institution.
It should be reminded that during 2015-2016, the National Security Committee prevented the activities of the criminal group “Zharkent” consisting of citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of China, engaged in smuggling of consumer goods, money extortion from participants of foreign economic activity, fraud, etc. (at the “Khorgos” International Centre of Boundary Cooperation, the posts "Dostyk" and "Dulaty" of the Xinjiang Autonomous Republic of China, as well as surrounded by temporary storage warehouse of Almaty city and Almaty region).
In 2016, 27 participants of the organized transnational crime group, including the officials of the border and customs services, who patronized this group, were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. However, its leaders Zh. Begimbetov and M. Niyazov fled from criminal prosecution and were put on the international wanted list.
In September 2018, M. Niyazov was detained in Kyrgyzstan and extradited to Kazakhstan through the “Interpol” National Central Bureau.
As a result of measures taken by the National Security Committee Zh. Begimbetov was detained in November 2018 in the territory of the Almaty region.
